Shining a Light on Broadcasters’ Vital Role in our Democracy

In 2013, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) launched the We Are Broadcasters campaign to educate policymakers on local radio and television broadcasters’ vital role in every community.

From raising awareness of important health issues and holding governments and businesses accountable through investigative reporting to provide lifesaving coverage of weather emergencies and innovating to better serve their audiences, the We Are Broadcasters campaign has a shone a spotlight on broadcasters’ dedication to helping their communities in unparalleled ways – setting them apart from other mediums.

Today, NAB is proud to launch new We Are Broadcasters radio and television spots in English and Spanish that highlight how broadcasters have provided the most trusted news and lifeline coverage of significant events nationwide over the past six months. Broadcasters have aired countless newscasts with critical information on how to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, covered civil unrest and protests over racial equality, provided emergency updates on wildfires and storms and reported on the 2020 political elections.

Even as broadcasters struggle to stay afloat during these challenging times, they are always there for their communities, bringing essential, fact-based reporting to Americans on every device free of charge.

As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of broadcasting, we also honor and celebrate broadcasters’ indispensable role in our democracy as bastions of the First Amendment and their unwavering commitment to bringing audiences the news they trust most when they need it most.
