Women in Broadcasting: RaMona Alexander, WDBD, Jackson, Miss.

During Women’s History Month, NAB is spotlighting prominent women in broadcasting. We talked to RaMona Alexander, vice president and general manager of WDBD, a local FOX affiliate in her hometown of Jackson, Miss., owned by American Spirit Media. She is also part of the management team that oversees WLOO, the local MyNet affiliate through a joint sales agreement with Tougaloo College. Read more about her career, advice and insights into broadcasting’s future below.

How did you get your start in broadcasting?

It was actually a dare from a friend to apply for the position of junior account executive at the local CBS station. I was always fascinated by television, so the interest to work in the field was there. Once I started, I fell totally in love with the business!

Why were you interested in working in the broadcast industry?

It’s fascinating, at the time, it was the one medium that could reach anyone with information as well as be a huge influence on culture. I wanted to explore those avenues.

What have been the most exciting changes in broadcasting during your career?

The integration of digital and social media to increase our reach and allow for direct interaction with citizens in our communities. I love the technology, although it has created its own set of challenges within our industry and our competition.

What is the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

To be my best self and be willing to listen and learn.

What advice would you give to young women interested in a career in broadcasting?

Gosh, that’s a great question for the times we are living in. Be willing to listen, learn and have patience – the world is yours if you are willing! There are no shortcuts, but there are so many opportunities if you are willing to pay your dues and do the work.

Where do you see broadcasting headed in the next five, ten or 20 years?

Technology will determine so much of our path. I believe there will always be a need for broadcast media, but in 10 or 20 years, how we will produce, deliver and consume content is unknown. This industry is steadily evolving with new technology, especially in the digital and social media space. I do believe it will be exciting and cutting edge in ways we cannot imagine!
