This week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) hosted a Media Ownership Diversity Symposium to explore the challenges and possible creative solutions to increasing ownership opportunities for women and people of color in media. This is a goal we share. Americans benefit when broadcast stations reflect the diversity of the communities they serve.
I was honored to moderate the lively discussion that took place between the outstanding media entrepreneurs on the panel “Hurdles and Opportunities in the Competitive Media/Tech Landscape.” While some of the perspectives varied, one sentiment resonated during the discussion: diverse and independent broadcasters feel their ability to deliver audiences to advertisers should be valued equally.
Several leaders from NAB’s member broadcast companies also participated in panels at the Symposium, including graduates of the NAB Leadership Foundation’s Broadcast Leadership Training Program. This rigorous MBA-style program is designed to prepare radio and TV station executives to own stations. We take great pride in how successful this program has been in helping numerous diverse leaders realize their dreams of station ownership.
NAB is committed to educating the FCC and members of Congress about opportunities to encourage diversity in broadcasting and modernize ownership rules. Through the NAB Leadership Foundation, we provide the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Resource Center to help companies expand their knowledge to successfully create more diverse and inclusive workplaces, as well as training programs to prepare broadcast professionals for leadership roles.
