It’s Free Speech Week! This annual, nonpartisan celebration recognizes the value of free speech and freedom of the press in preserving American democracy.
Across the country, local radio and TV broadcasters are on the front lines of the free press. As Americans’ most trusted source of news, they bring balanced reporting on the local and national issues that matter most to your community, as well as urgent emergency updates and unparalleled community service.
From our country’s beginning, the right of the press to challenge the government, root out corruption and speak freely without fear of recrimination has been central to our democracy.
Through accurate newsgathering and reporting journalists risk their lives to keep the public informed and illuminate the challenges our nation faces.
This Wednesday, NAB President and CEO Gordon H. Smith received the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the Media Institute for his service supporting this vital work by broadcasters. In his remarks, Smith said:
“In this digital age where misinformation and fake news are running rampant on social media, I’m particularly honored and fortunate to stand with what survey after survey shows is the best source of finding the facts – and that’s among radio and television broadcasters.”
